Medical Assistant Externship – Why Do I Need it?

Medical assistant (MA) students train to work in a variety of health care settings including clinics, hospitals and physician practices. Medical assistant training programs are available at 91茄子.聽 Our program provides students with the knowledge they need to develop the skills necessary to work successfully as a medical assistant.聽They include courses pertaining to patient care, medications, and office administration. Toward the end of their programs, 91茄子 requires students to participate in a medical assistant externshipTop of Form

How can externship help me?

An externship, also known as job shadowing, provides students with opportunity to work closely with an experienced person working in their chosen field. A MA externship allows medical assisting students the chance to work with medical assistants already established in the field. It provides them with the chance to work directly with patients, doctors and other health care providers. MA externships are typically set up through the school and can last up to an entire semester. Some programs set up the externships with a variety of health care establishments. This gives students the chance to gain experience in multiple health care settings, including physician practices, clinics and hospitals. It also allows students to see the different specialties in which a MA can choose. Medical assistants have the chance to specialize in areas such as optometry, obstetrics, pediatrics and podiatry.

What would I do during the Externship? Do I Need it?

A medical assistant externship is an important part of the training students go through in order to work as a successful medical assistant.聽A MA externship allows students to practice and develop the skills necessary to work in the medical assisting industry. They apply the knowledge they learn when assessing patients. They get the chance to explain about medications or treatments that the patient is to perform at home. They have the ability to practice demonstrating equipment the patient needs to care for them at home.

The MA externship allows students to gain the clinical experience of caring for patients and running the office. They get to greet patients and collect patient information including demographics and insurance provider information. MA students are shown during their externship how to coordinate a patient鈥檚 care with other health care provider. This occurs when the patient needs an appointment with a specialist, therapy sessions and diagnostic testing. All of the experience gained during a medical assistant externship is helpful when applying and interviewing for jobs because the time spent during an internship counts toward your total time as a MA.

You get to work with an experienced medical assistant:

Medical assistant externships act as a transitional time, allowing individuals to go from students to practicing MA. They learn how to apply what they were taught and practiced during school. The experienced MA a student is assigned to shadow will spend a few days orienting the student to the office. They will explain how the office is run and provide systematic instructions how to perform the duties required of them at that facility. After the student becomes more comfortable in the health care setting, the experienced MA will begin having the student perform the tasks and duties in which they are responsible.

The experienced MA will observe the student while performing the duties and provide constructive criticism and tips for performing certain tasks. Students have the chance to ask questions and focus more on their weaknesses during this time. The transition from students to actual medical assistants allows them to enter the workforce competently because they have the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to work as a MA in the field. An externship provides the opportunity to gain experience actually working as a medical assistant. The MA externship allows students to perfect their techniques for performing assessments, treatments and administering medications.

Medical Assistant program at 91茄子 has 250 hours of Externship program. During this period, students work in medical offices, hospitals and clinical laboratories. Many of students receive job offers at the end of their externship to work at the externship site as a full time employees.

Medical Billing - what is this?
聽Medical Billing – The Four Basics

is a payment practice within the United States health system where healthcare providers like your doctors, nurses, orthopedists, dentists etc, submit and follow up on claims with insurance companies, in order to receive payment for services rendered such as treatments, investigations and so on.

91茄子 offers a special module “Medical Insurance and Billing incorporated in our Medical Assistant program.

Please click here to Register. Please call 212-947-7940 if you have any questions.

Before now, medical billing used to be done entirely on paper; filing, submitting claims, etc. But with the advent of , healthcare providers can now efficiently manage and submit claims and receive payments for a lot of people.

  1. Medical billing is the bridge between your healthcare provider and insurance company: Medical billing is the where your healthcare provider sends an invoice detailing your treatment and the health services received to your health insurer for payment.

This invoice is called a claim. Sometimes, your insurance company pays it all and sometimes you might need to pay part of it. That is what you call co-paying.

If there is one thing insurance companies are great at, it is their inability to pay up and their tendency to lower the cost they have to pay.

I mean we鈥檝e heard horror stories where insurance claims are severely contested by insurance companies leading to a loss of income for the hospitals and denied healthcare for the patient.

This has led hospitals and hospices alike to significantly increase the cost of medical procedures to more than make up for any loss and to employ the services of professionals like medical billers.

  1. Good medical billers boost company bottom line: Medical billers have always been a staple of healthcare institutions. But they do more than just file claims for insurance, knowledgeable medical billers can boost the revenue of medical practices.

Medical billers prepare for insurance companies and ensure that the practice receives payment for work done.

Also, they regularly communicate with physicians and other healthcare professionals to clarify diagnoses and to obtain additional information about your treatments and what not. Bet you didn鈥檛 know that, did you?

You totally don鈥檛 want the case where you are slapped with a bill for a completely unrelated procedure when you had a mere CT scan.

With that said, the financial health of your health service providers not only depends on your continued patronage; it also depends on the excellent performance of medical billers.

  1. Medical billing makes use of specialized software: Like I said, medical billers prepare claims for insurance companies and ensure that their establishments are properly reimbursed and remunerated.

Medical billers are in charge of activities like processing patient data, such as treatment records, patients鈥 diagnoses and related

To reduce the risk of error, medical billers and billing services make use of specialized software to efficiently manage client information and insurance claims.

Medical billing software allows for excellent streamlining of billing activities from claim submissions to managing insurance and patients鈥 payments and patient billing.

These web or cloud-based software allow billers and healthcare providers access their system from anywhere which probably explains why billing services are now outsourced to medical billing services.

  1. Sometimes medical billing is outsourced to medical billing services: The sobering fact of health care in the United States is that there are far fewer hospitals now than there were even ten years ago.

With health insurance outsourced to insurance companies and hospitals typically getting an approximate 10% reimbursement of total health service cost, many hospitals are starved of necessary cash flow.

For a medical practice to stay above water or even thrive depends to a large extent on their billing department.

The more statements they can get out to patients and the more claims they can get the insurance companies to pay, the faster they鈥檒l be bringing money into the practice.

Usually, medical billing is handled in-house. Some medical offices have one employee(s) that specifically runs the billing department. Other times, it is mostly outsourced to .

Medical billing services regularly send claims on behalf of their clients (healthcare providers) to insurance companies and are contractually obligated to follow up on all unpaid and denied claims.

Also, medical billing services handle everything about billing in a timely manner leaving healthcare professionals to focus on what they do best- administering treatment.

Another of outsourcing your medical billing is that you are able to objectively assess the performance of your billing providers. Billing services are required to regularly provide an up-to-date performance report for their clients.

With this report, you are not only able to see how well the practice is doing, you will be able to evaluate the performance of the billing company.
Hospital and doctor鈥檚 office visits are becoming more expensive. Most Americans who file for bankruptcy do so because of high debt from medical expenses.

Another reason for this (besides inflated health care costs and insurance companies鈥 gorging of medical costs), is common medical billing mistakes.

Common mistakes made by the medical billing community include duplicate billing where billing staff bills you and insurance twice.

Another is unbundling where you are charged for each separate procedure that should have ordinarily gone together.

Also look out for upcoding charges; a practice where a doctor or hospital uses improper billing codes and charges for a more expensive service than what was actually done like charging you for invasive heart surgery when you only went for a flu shot.

The first step to protecting against potential ruinous medical charges is education- update your knowledge of medical charges and billing statements, shop around for the and keep good records of all your medical transactions

Wall of Fame

At 91茄子, all of our students are special to us! 聽Although everyone is special, being an honoree of our Wall of Fame signifies that you have successfully completed your academic training and development, passed your certification examinations and secured employment, which will lead to your new career in healthcare.

Our Wall of Fame was started about 4 years ago by our Sr. Career Services Advisor, Mr. Andre Jackson, with a much smaller board over his desk in Career Services. It contained snippets of emails from recently employed graduates expressing their gratitude. Soon after the board was overflowing with notes, emails and thank you cards and all our Career Service Advisors started adding to the Wall of Fame more and more successful stories about our graduates.

Since then, it has evolved into a much larger bulletin board populated with color-copied work IDs of the proud employees of Hospitals and Clinics across 91茄子 York such as NYU, Mt. Sinai, Memorial Sloan Kettering, NY Presbyterian, Northwell and SUNY Downstate. Our Career Services team is well-connected with many hospitals and agencies in NYS and they all work together to place our graduates subsequently adding more IDs to our wall.

Today, the conversations with many students who walk by usually start with, 鈥淗ow do I get up there?鈥 and 鈥淵ou鈥檒l see! My picture will be on the NAT Wall of Fame too.鈥

Our graduates are proud to share their stories with us. We have heard of their challenges from the first day of class and it is rewarding to learn how they overcame adversity and obstacles due to the guidance and advice from the NAT team. We are excited about further developing our Wall of Fame with success stories and IDs.

We will continue to promote this board and showcase all of our gainfully employed graduates, so if you are a 91茄子 graduate reading this post, we鈥檒l see you on the Wall!

How to Write Medical Assistant Resume

Want to make a good impression on your job application? You need a good resume to turn in. Resumes for medical assistants are a little bit different than those of other professions, just because employers look for specific certifications and job experiences. If you present yourself well in your resume, you can get any job you want to. Here are some tips on how to write a medical assistant resume.

Prioritize Your Information

Put your best foot forward on your resume. That means you should put past medical assisting jobs and education right at the top. You can include information like skills and references later on in the resume, but you need to show people from the start why you are worth hiring. Think about the first thing you鈥檇 tell someone about in a job interview, and make that at the top of your list.

Customize Your Resume

Try to do what you can to make your resume reflect the job you鈥檙e applying to. If you know the people are looking for someone with great secretarial skills, try to mention that in your resume. If you know they care more about certification, mention any awards and achievements you can. You want the company to feel like you made an entire resume just for them.

Emphasize Your Skills

Let people know what you are really talented at. If you are experienced with a certain software program or filing system, mention that. Be as specific as you can be. The more you tell people about your abilities, the more likely they are to hire you.

Don鈥檛 Forget Your Phone Number!

You have to remember to put your contact information on your resume, somewhere that it is going to be seen well. Include it at the top left corner of the resume, and make your name and number bold. The last thing you need is to turn in a resume that people cannot respond to.

Add a cover letter to your resume to give a summary of what it is all about. Then make sure to turn it in on time. If you present yourself well, you will surely get the job.

Interview questions for medical assistants: common questions during interview for medical assistant position

Common Questions for a Medical Assistant Interview

Do you have an interview coming up for a medical assistant job? Are you nervous about what the questions might be? We can鈥檛 predict what your future employer will ask you, but we can show you some common questions to expect. If you are prepared with answers to these questions, you should be able to get through the interview in one piece.

  1. What is your work experience in the medical field?

If you have worked as an intern or a medical assistant in the past, this is the time to bring up your experience. If you do not have any experience, talk about your education or other work you have done in the past. As long as you can tie it into your career in some way, you鈥檒l be in good shape.

  1. Are you certified?

This one is pretty straightforward. If you are not certified at this time, tell your employer about the steps you are taking to earn your certification. Just make sure you鈥檙e honest about that.

  1. Would you consider yourself a people person?

Always answer this question with a 鈥測es.鈥 Medical assistants have to work with patients on a daily basis. They are the ones that create the first impression of a place of work. If you cannot work well with people, you鈥檙e not going to get hired. Period.

  1. How would you handle an angry patient?

This is a tough question to answer because sometimes you have to show some assertiveness towards an unruly patient. Rather than letting your employer know that though, you can tell him that you would try to politely calm the patient as much as possible. If you were unsuccessful with that, you can say that you would ask for support from a supervisor. Interviewers like to hear that you鈥檙e not afraid to ask for assistance.

  1. What made you want to be a medical assistant?

Be as honest as you want to here. Just note that employers will be able to tell if you are lying about this matter. If the truth is you just wanted a good job to support your family, explain that. Honesty is always the best policy.
Think about what you would want to know about someone you were interviewing, and prepare to answer those kinds of questions. You will be working at the office in no time!
